Summer Clouds

The Marlborough Downs near Avebury in Wiltshire have an unmistakable look all year round, but in high summer are made up of soft swaying grasses, verdant crops and the giant sentinels of beech trees on the Ridgeway. The land undulates so gently that you can see for miles.

This piece is a graphite sketch, worked up with watercolour and a few grasses added in gouache. I wanted to really study the arrangement of the trees in the middle distance and capture the layered appearance of the landscape that is so typical of this area.
