Spring is just around the corner, and I’m excited to be marking this seasonal transition by taking part in a collaborative exhibition at the wonderful MADE in the Pewsey Vale gallery. It’s always rewarding to work with other artists on a project as we’re solitary creatures by nature, and it’s good to get together!
The brief for the show, The Lost Path, couldn’t have been a better fit for my work, although I didn’t necessarily realise it until well into the process. I’ve had so many thoughts about The Lost Path – I feel as though I’ve been on a very long walk in my head. I’ve noticed that paths crop up everywhere in my daily life, more physically than metaphorically, and that they are essentially just journeys or experiences that are different every time.
I spend a fair amount of time wandering around the lovely Wiltshire countryside, and the daily changes through the seasons can be seen at very close quarters in a country lane or woodland path. In spring and summer it’s possible to be perfectly isolated in a verdant maze of foliage, whilst in winter, there could be far-reaching views through the bare trees. Each walk provides a lasting sensation when it’s over, like an echo in time, making me look forward to the next visit. A new experience every time, then lost again.

In preparation for the show, I’ve particularly enjoyed exploring new areas of Pewsey for inspiration. I discovered a satisfying variety of landscapes including the iconic village boundary paths below the hills, together with some atmospheric wooded areas. I have a feeling that the paintings will keep coming well after the exhibition is over.
For The Lost Path, I’ve been using different painting techniques and materials in an attempt to convey the changing seasons and weather. My larger paintings are based around watercolour layered with charcoal or graphite drawing, and smaller pieces are painted in acrylics on wood panels.
The Lost Path runs from Friday 20th to Saturday 28th February at madeinthepewseyvale.com, 25 High Street, SN9 5AF. Gallery opening hours are 10am until 4pm.
